Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears GB+3
So far, I haven’t seen anything yet that proves to me that GB QB Aaron Rodgers & GB HC Matt LeFleur are on the same page. Going forward this is not good for GB. Also, players seem to run away from Rodgers which is also not good. The big battle will be the GB O-LINE vs CHI DEF. In past years Rodgers has owned CHI but CHI has gotten a lot better in the recent past and may be coming at him hard. GB WR Equanimeous St. Brown is out as is a slew of others that could help GB. For CHI, TE Tre Burton & WR Anthony Miller are both questionable as well. L12 CHI(H) vs GB, CHI 4-8 SUATS. L16 CHI vs GB, GB 11-5 ATS. CHI 16-24 AT as a FAV in SEPT. CHI 19-27 ATS vs NFC NORTH in SEPT. CHI 27-29 ATS @HOME in SEPT. CHI 2-6 ATS on THURS. L17 GB vs CHI, ROAD 10-7 ATS. GB 22-25 ATS AWAY in SEPT. GB 24-17 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. GB 2-4 ATS AWAY on TNF. The line has held steady for this game and CHI QB Mitch Trubisky has to show that he has matured and can lead this team further into the playoffs. Look for GB to see if their running gme has improved to the point that it can be reliable. This is a game that CHI needs to make a statement that the old guard has changed in the NFC NORTH and that CHI is a force to be reckoned with. But I like CHI here because they will be pumped and they are at home.
THE PICK: CHI-3 5 STARS
Sunday September 8th, 2019 1:00pm
Tennessee Titans @ Cleveland Browns TENN+5
After CLEVE won six games in 2018 they made a lot of player changes in the off-season to try to take the team to the next step, which would be the playoffs. They have a new HC, DC & OC so there may be a learning curve but this team has talent. Now if they can mesh right. TENN’s biggest acquisition in the off-season was DE Cameron Wake as they did have a good draft with some guys filling needs right away. However, college is not the PROS and TENN may have taken a step back in their development. L7 CLEVE vs TENN, CLEVE 3-4 SU but 5-2 ATS. CLEVE 17-17 ATS @HOME in SEPT. CLEVE 4-8 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. CLEVE 19-15-2 ATS as a HF vs non-div since 2003. TENN 27-24 ATS AWAY in SEPT. TENN 33-22 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. CLEVE would like to start the season off on the right foot and show everyone one of their new weapons, WR Odell Beckham. QB Baker Mayfield should have a big day as TENN will just have to take this game as a learning lesson. However, look for Mayfield to be a little anxious and make a few mistakes. CLEVE should recover and get a win. Lay the points here.
THE PICK: CLEVE-5 5 STARS
Baltimore Ravens @ Miami Dolphins MIA+7
MIA QB Ryan Fitzpatrick seems to do well at the very beginning of the new season and then tails off. Remember last season, game 1 @NO? Well, he has an uncanny ability to start strong and everyone thinks they found their savior. Then he reverts back to his old self and he becomes the human turnover. BALT is definitely not the same team that started a year ago. No QB Joe Flacco and the DEF has been shaken up with the departure of guys that you have come to hear repeatedly making big plays. BALT QB Lamar Jackson is going to have to prove to everyone that he is a better choice than the departed Flacco. He will have to show everyone that he has matured his game from a year ago. BALT has owned MIA but again there has been a big transition in BALT and guys are just getting acclimated. L9 BALT vs MIA, BALT 7-2 SUATS. BAT @ MIA, BALT 3-2 SU & 4-1 ATS. BALT 24-28 ATS AWAY in SEPT. BALT 33-26 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. BALT 5-6 ATS L11 as a ROAD FAV. MIA 8-6-1 ATS L15 as a HOME DOG. MIA 6-7 ATS L13 in 1st of BB HG’s. MIA 22-24 ATS @HOME in SEPT. MIA 24-23 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. MIA 7-1 ATS L8 before NE. On Sept 1st, MIA traded T Laremy Tunsil & WR Kenny Stills with draft picks to HOU for CB Johnson Bademosland, T Julian Davenport & high draft picks. This is a big game for MIA HC Brian Flores as he would like to get this team off on the right start. If BALT does win this game outright it will be by a closer score than the spread suggests. I like MIA to keep things close here at HOME because of Fitzpatrick and the uncertainty of BALT QB Jackson & the revamped BALT DEF.
THE PICK: MIA+6 ½ 3 STARS
Atlanta Falcons @ Minnesota Vikings ATL+4
ATL has a high powered OFF but has a DEF that can be a liability. This team may have to keep scoring just to stay ahead. They have injuries to key guys on DEF and need everyone that can play and play well. Both of these teams had down years in 2018 but ATL does have a better OFF. MINN QB Kirk Cousins & HC Mike Zimmer are under the gun and cannot have another season like 2018. MINN did pick up WR Josh Doctson but he is not a #1 receiver. RB Dalvin Cook needs to stay healthy to take some pressure off of Cousins. L7 ATL vs MINN, MINN 4-3 SUATS. L5 ATL @MINN, ATL 3-2 ATS. ATL 30-28 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. ATL 30-28 ATS AWAY in SEPT. ATL 8-2 ATS as a DOG vs NFC NORTH. ATL 7-0 ATS as a DOG <6pts vs NFC NORTH. ATL 1-7 ATS in gms 1-4 as a RD >3pts vs opp who won <13 gms the previous season. MINN 31-24 ATS @HOME in SEPT. MINN 26-31 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. This game should be closer than the spread suggests as ATL & QB Matt Ryan do well in domes.
THE PICK: ATL+4 5 STARS
Buffalo Bills @ NY Jets BUFF+3
BUFF just let go of RB LeSean McCoy. Was it a good move? I don’t think so. Plus, BUFF has a lot of guys already out on injury. RB Frank Gore, age 36, is the slated starter. Hopefully BUFF QB Josh Allen has learned a lot in his 1st season and has matured. NYJ made a lot of player movements & coaching changes in the off season. For more info on the NYJ, read the section AFC PROJECTIONS on my website. NYJ HC Adam GASE is under the gun and if he doesn’t start out with a win, he will be behind the 8-ball with the NY media. BUFF HC Sean McDermott is already under the gun but had an injury plagued 2018 campaign. L12 NYJ (H) vs BUFF, NYJ 7-5 SU & 5-7 ATS. L19 BUFF vs NYJ, NYJ 11-8 SU & 10-9 ATS. L15 BUFF vs NYJ, BUFF 9-6 ATS. L19 NYJ vs BUFF, FAV 10-8 ATS, 1 PICK’EM. L24 BUFF vs NYJ, BUFF 13-11 ATS. NYJ 3-9 ATS L12 in 1st of BB HG’s. NYJ 24-20 ATS vs AFC EAST in SEPT. NYJ 18-22 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. NYJ 20-30 ATS @HOME in SEPT. NYJ 5-4-1 ATS L10 HOME openers. BUFF 6-8 ATS in 1st of BB RG’s. BUFF 25-21 ATS AWAY in SEPT. BUFF 28-24 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. BUFF 22-19 ATS vs AFC EAST in SEPT. NYJ DEF has to show what it’s got. They can’t let Josh Allen sit in the pocket and pick them apart. NYJ have been known to do well in HOME openers and the spread is not that bad. Unless NYJ get sloppy, they should win this game outright and cover.
THE PICK: NYJ-3 5 STARS
Washington Redskins @ Philadelphia Eagles WASH+9 ½
So Case Keenum is the official QB starter for WASH this weekend. LT Trent Williams is still a holdout and LT Donald Penn is in his place. WASH always starts strong and I expect them to keep this game close. PHILLY is all in with QB Carson Wentz and some nice receivers but WR DeSean Jackson is not the same guy that was here before. I said it in my NFC Projections. The DEF for PHILLY lost a few guys from 2018 and may have some deficiencies that held over into 2019. PHILLY already has a host of players that are banged up or out. The secondary which has been a problem for WASH is a little banged up but should be able to make some plays. L12 WASH @PHILLY, WASH 6-6 SU & 8-4 ATS. L20 WASH vs PHILLY, FAV 11-9 ATS. L24 WASH vs PHILLY, ROAD 15-9 ATS. WASH 34-17 ATS AWAY in SEPT. WASH 25-23 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. WASH 19-22 ATS vs NFC EAST in SEPT. WASH 11-3 ATS before DAL. WASH 9-2 ATS in gms 1-4 as a DOG vs div opp. PHILLY 21-28 ATS @HOME in SEPT. PHILLY 28-36 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. PHILLY 14-18 ATS vs NFC EAST in SEPT. Believe it or not WASH can make this game competitive by not making too many mistakes. They do have talent on OFF but, the DEF needs to make some plays. Take the points here because WASH will keep it close.
THE PICK: WASH+9 ½ 5 STARS
LA Rams @ Carolina Panthers CAR+2 ½
CAR QB Cam Newton is still a question mark in my mind because of his off-season shoulder surgery and his mid foot sprain. CAR has seen a lot of guys in training camp and CAR HC Ron Rivera knows that he is under pressure this season. But LAR is coming off the SB loss and would like to start the season off with a win. LAR Sean McVay is a good coach and getting better all the time. We’ll see if all the shuffling in CAR did any good against this explosive LAR team. How will LAR RB Todd Gurley’s knee hold up? Also, I would like to see how the LAR secondary holds against the scrambling Newton? CAM in openers 4-4 SUATS. CAR 4-2 ATS L6 as a HOME DOG. CAR 10-5 ATS L15 in 1st of BB HG’s. CAR 18-24 ATS @HOME in SEPT. CAR 21-19 ATS @HOME in SEPT. CAR 8-1 ATS before TNF. CAR 5-6-1 ATS L12 before TB. L6 CAR vs LAR, CAR 5-1 SU & 4-1-1 ATS incl, CAR (H) vs LAR 3-0 SUATS. Last time these two teams plays was at LA in 2016. By the way, the SuperBowl runner up 7-13 SU & 4-16 ATS week 1 since 1999. There is certainly pressure on CAR to keep up with NO but, LAR is to stocked with guys at the D-LINE that will T-off on Cam this week. Lay the three points as LAR starts off well.
THE PICK: LAR-3 5 STARS
KC Chiefs @ Jacksonville Jags JAGS+4
KC had one of the worst DEFs in the NFL in 2018 but still managed to make it to the AFC Championship game. JAGS totally collapsed in 2018 after making it to the AFC Championship game in 2017. JAGS need a healthy & productive RB Leonard Fournette to balance the OFF & take some pressure off of QB Nick Foles. JAGS DEF is respectable but can’t stay on the field forever. They will have their hands full vs QB Pat Mahomes & CO. Also added to the mix is recently acquired RB LeSean McCoy. JAGS OFF needs to step up. Look for newly acquired JAGS WR Chris Conley to make some plays. These two teams played each other in 2018 @KC with KC winning 30-14. A little revenge is in order for JAGS. L8 JAGS vs KC, KC 5-3 SUATS. JAGS 9-8 ATS L17 as a HOME DOG. JAGS 20-20 ATS @HOME in SEPT. JAGS 25-26 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. JAGS 17-29 ATS L46 as a HOME DOG. JAGS 1-8 ATS L9 vs AFC WEST. KC 5-4 ATS in 1st of BB RG’s. KC 35-20 ATS AWAY in SEPT. KC 31-22 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. KC 10-4-1 ATS L15 AWAY vs AFC SOUTH. KC 11-4 ATS L15 as a conf RF <7pts. Everyone knows that GM Tom Coughlin coached against KC Andy Reid for many seasons when Reid was with PHILLY. He may add a lot of value to the coaching staff in how to prepare vs KC. This game will be closer than expected because JAGS always start out well. They may even win this game outright as JAGS need to make 2019 better. KC’s totally revamped DEF will get plenty of tests in this game as JAGS should play smart and wear them out. KC will be back in the mix but may lose this one due to overconfidence. JAGS steal this one. Take the points.
THE PICK: JAGS+4 3 STARS
Sunday September 8th, 2019 4:00pm
Indianapolis Colts @ LA Chargers INDY+6 ½
LAC is without RB Melvin Gordon but, has other weapons that should step up. INDY QB Andrew Luck has retired and Jacoby Brissett has been named the QB. INDY has gone all in with Brissett giving him a nice contract for the next two years. However, three RBs are out. Marlon Mack is the starter but LAC is very good vs the RUN, #9 in 2018. LAC has always been great vs AFC SOUTH except vs INDY w/Luck & Manning. But now, neither of them is there and they can tee off. L7 LAC vs INDY, LAC 4-3 SU & 5-2 ATS. LAC 26-24 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. LAC 26-28 ATS @HOME in SEPT. LAC 34-29-1 ATS L64 as a HF vs non-div. LAC (Rivers) 26-4 ATS vs AFC SOUTH. LAC 14-1 ATS @HOME vs AFC SOUTH. INDY 5-7-2 ATS in 1st of BB RG’s. INDY 27-23 ATS AWAY in SEPT. INDY 20-22 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. INDY 8-6 ATS AWAY vs AFC WEST. The DEF for LAC is very good and should make some plays vs INDY. LAC needs to make an opening statement that they will be contending for the AFC WEST crown. Brissett will have a lot of pressure on him and LAC should win this game by more than a td. Lay the points here.
THE PICK: LAC-6 ½ 5 STARS
Cincinnati Bengals @ Seattle Seahawks CINNCY+9 ½
SEA picked up DE Jadeveon Clowney for basically nothing. SEA has the problem of the O-LINE & RB. We’ll see if they were addressed when CINNCY comes a calling. There is a new HC in CINNCY for the 1st time in a long time and QB Andy Dalton knows he needs to get things going. RBs Giovani Bernard & Joe Mixon need to be heavily in the mix to take pressure off of Dalton. Recently acquired RB Samaje Perine may even see some action. L3 CINNCY vs SEA, CINNCY 2-1 SU & 2-0-1 ATS incl @SEA, CINNCY 1-1 SU & 2-0 ATS. CINNCY 19-23 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. CINNCY 26-24 ATS AWAY in SEPT. CINNCY 10-2 ATS in gms 1-4 vs NFC opp. SEA 32-20-1 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. SEA 30-20 ATS @HOME in SEPT. SEA 14-16 ATS L30 as a HF 7>pts. SEA 20-5 ATS in gms 1-4 @HOME vs non-div opp. SEA has a banged up squad and some weaknesses in the secondary. This is a big spread to cover and SEA has been known to start out of the gate slowly. CINNCY has to limit their mistakes and get some big plays going through a SEA secondary that is weak at S. They need to exploit them and keep it close.
THE PICK: CINNCY+9 ½ 3 STARS
NY Giants @ Dallas Cowboys NYG+7
DAL RB Ezekial Elliott ended his holdout and signed a big contract extension with DAL. It couldn’t have come at a worse time for NYG. With Elliott, QB Dak Prescott suddenly gets better because he doesn’t have to carry the load. NYG doesn’t seem to be going anywhere this season and whether people know it or not is going through a transition. Eli Manning is the starting QB for NYG, for now, but, things could change as the season progresses. But for now, he is the starter. There were a lot of changes on both sides of the ball for NYG as documented by my website in NFC Projections. Let’s see if they get off to the right foot. How much O-LINE protection will Eli have? L13 DAL(H) vs NYG, DAL 7-6 SU & 6-6-1 ATS. DAL vs NYG season openers, DAL 9-1 SU. L20 DAL vs NYG, ROAD 10-9-1 ATS. DAL @HOME vs NYG new stadium, 5-5 SU & 4-5-1 ATS. DAL 16-34-1 ATS L51 as a HF. DAL 29-38-2 as a FAV L8 seasons. DAL 26-33 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. DAL 21-27 ATS @HOME in SEPT. L4 NYG vs DAL, DAL 4-0 SUATS. NYG 26-21 ATS AWAY in SEPT. NYG 28-24 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. Look for NYG RB Saquon Barkley to be heavily involved in this game to get the OFF going and to take pressure off of Eli. However, the DAL DEF will be ready and pumped. Lay the points here as DAL rolls with Zeke.
THE PICK: DAL-7 5 STARS
Detroit Lions @ Arizona Cardinals ARZ+2 ½
DET HC Matt Patricia definitely learned a lot in his 1st season as HC. He has started to clean house and evaluate guys better than what he was handed before last season. There has been a lot of player movement in DET this off-season but, QB Matt Stafford is still there. DET doesn’t have as many guys injured and banged up as other teams. Patricia even recruited a few ex-NEs to make himself feel at home. ARZ tore themselves down and are in a total rebuild. ARZ cut players and even traded their so-called QB of the future and then drafted another one. ARZ is all in and betting on the future with QB Kyler Murray who is listed at 5’10”. DET 4-2 ATS L6 as a ROAD FAV. DET 12-15-1 ATS L28 as a ROAD FAV. L11 DET vs ARZ, DET 4-7 SU & 5-6 ATS incl DET @ARZ, DET 1-5 SUATS. DET 22-30 ATS AWAY in SEPT. DET 37-36 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. DET 3-11-1 ATS L15 AWAY vs NFC WEST. ARZ 18-26-1 ATS @HOME in SEPT. ARZ 37-31-1 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. ARZ 9-3 ATS L12 as a non-div HD. ARZ 12-3 ATS as a non div HD <7pts. ARZ 9-2 ATS in gms 1-4 as a HD. Patrica will throw the kitchen sink at ARZ new HC & their QB. DET should come away with a convincing win here.
THE PICK: DET-2 ½ 5 STARS
SF 49ers @ TB Bucs SF+1
This is a redemption year for SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo and he needs to stay healthy and play well. HC Kyle Shanahan needs to get off on the right foot as well because he hasn’t shown anyone that he can be a HC. Unfortunately for the rest of SF there are many guys that are banged up and already on IR. Whoever plays RB for SF needs to be productive so to take some pressure off of Jimmy G. TB has a host of problems in that they have a host of players on an already weak DEF that are out and banged up. HC Bruce Arians came back from retirement and health concerns to a TB team that is going nowhere fast. L8, SF vs TB, 4-4 SUATS. SF 9-7-1 ATS L17 in BB RG’s. SF 23-20 ATS AWAY in SEPT. SF 21-21 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. SF 1-6 ATS L7 vs NFC SOUTH. TB 21-25 ATS @HOME in SEPT. TB 12-23-2 ATS L32 as a HF. TB 0-7-1 ATS before TNF. This is also a big season for TB QB Jameis Winston to prove that he can play. We’ll see as his big target WR Mike Evans has been the only reliable staple on OFF. SF DEF needs to play a good game. This game could go down to the wire.
THE PICK: SF+1 3 STARS
Sunday September 8th, 2019 8:20pm
Pittsburgh Steelers @ NE Patriots PITT+5 ½
No matter what, NE keeps rolling along. Don’t think for a minute that NE forgot about the loss they had at PITT last season. NE doesn’t forget anything. This season Big Ben will be without WR Antonio Brown & RB Le’Veon Bell. Who will step up in their places? Only time will tell if anyone does. I’m guessing that no one matches them. PITT WR JuJu Smith-Schuster had a great break out season but, that was with Brown on the other side. Who is there now? Donte Moncrief? Good luck. At RB, James Connor will try to fill the role but it won’t be easy. For NE it’s business as usual. Super Bowl Winner, Week 1 following year is 12-5-2 ATS, 2000-2018. Belichick & Tomlin are no strangers to each other but, NE has added guys that can help while PITT has lost some guys. L11 NE vs PITT, NE 7-4 SU & 6-4-1 ATS. NE(H) vs PITT, NE 3-1 SU & 2-1-1 ATS. NE 2-9 ATS @HOME in gms 1-4 w/revenge vs non-div opp. NE 22-28 ATS @HOME in SEPT. NE 26-33 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. Belichick 14-5 SU in openers. NE 10-11-1 ATS @HOME on SNF. NE 12-14-1 ATS as a FAV on SNF. PITT 18-34-1 ATS AWAY in SEPT. PITT 10-21-1 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. PITT 7-18 ATS L25 vs NON-DIV CONF. PITT 13-14 ATS AWAY on SNF. PITT 1-7 ATS in gms 1-4 as a RD >3pts vs non-div opp. The revenge factor is strong for NE & Brady of course wants to show everyone that he is strong and has lost nothing. Unless there is sloppiness on the part of NE they should cover by at least a td.
THE PICK: NE-5 ½ 5 STARS
Monday September 9th, 2019 7:10pm
Houston Texans @ NO Saints HOU+7
HOU traded away DE Jadeveon Clowney but acquired WR Kenny Stills & OT Laremy Tunsil to help out the OFF. HC Bill O’Brien better know what he is doing or he is out in Texas. I don’t think he is a good coach anyway, so I see him on borrowed time. The O-LINE better protect as NO DEF will be a coming. NO is probably still upset about the NFC Championship game but, HC Sean Payton will have no excuses this season. Anyway, O’Brien can’t be conservative against this OFF and needs to go toe to toe with NO. HOU 14-19 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. HOU 13-16 ATS AWAY in SEPT. HOU 10-5 ATS before JAGS. HOU 2-9-12 ATS on MNF. HOU 1-3-1 ATS as a RD on MNF. L3 HOU vs NO, HOU 2-1 SUATS but 0-1 SUATS @NO. HOU 1-9 ATS in gms 1-4 as a DOG vs NFC opp. NO 24-23 ATS @HOME in SEPT. NO 24-27 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. NO 10-6 SU & 9-7 ATS on MNF. NO 37-25-2 ATS L64 @HOME. NO 33-29-3 ATS as a HF vs non-div. NO 9-11 ATS L20 @HOME vs AFC. NO 3-10 ATS as a non-conf FAV 3>pts. NO 0-5 ATS as a non-conf HF >4pts. This game will be closer than the spread as NO has been known to start off the season slowly. Also, NO could be looking ahead to wk 2 @LAR. Take the points here.
THE PICK: HOU+7 3 STARS
Monday September 9th, 201 10:20pm
Denver Broncos @ Oakland Raiders DEN+1
So, OAK HC Jon Gruden is into the 2nd year of his mammoth contract. Like I said LY, he will do four years of the contract and head off into the Vegas sunset. OAK has changed a lot of players but QB Derek Carr is still there and we’ll see if he learned anything from his first season with Gruden. OAK was terrible on both sides of the ball and has a lot to prove before anyone is saying that they are playoff material. DEN went out and got QB Joe Flacco from BALT. He is an upgrade from what was there before but is he upgraded from Average Joe? We’ll see but everyone will be watching. To help Flacco, there is RB Phillip Lindsay who was a pleasant surprise and should have a good game vs OAK, even though he is recovering from off-season wrist surgery. Also, brand new coaching staff for DEN. Let’s see how they adjust as well. This is also the debut for OAK WR Antonio Brown. We’ll see if he keeps his cool when Carr can’t get the ball to him as much as Big Ben did. No DEF upgrades for OAK in the off-season, what was Gruden thinking? L12 DEN @OAK, DEN 7-5 SUATS. L15 DEN vs OAK, DEN 11-4 SU & 10-5 ATS. L24 DEN vs OAK, ROAD 14-10 ATS. DEN 28-19 ATS AWAY in SEPT. DEN 17-11 ATS as a DOG in SEPT. DEN 20-15 ATS vs AFC WEST in SEPT. DEN 20-4 SU & 15-8-1 ATS in gms 1-4 L6 seasons. DEN 7-13 ATS as a RD on MNF. DEN 3-9 ATS L12 on MNF. DEN 13-8 ATS L21 DIV RG’s. OAK 4-7 ATS in 1st of BB HG’s. OAK 23-28 ATS @HOME in SEPT. OAK 12-23 ATS vs AFC WEST in SEPT. OAK 21-23 ATS as a FAV in SEPT. OAK 6-5 ATS as a HF on MNF. OAK 1-9 ATS as div HF vs opp w/revenge. OAK may not improve on their record from 2018 and they are lame duck in OAK town. Next year Vegas. But here, take DEN.
THE PICK: DEN+1 5 STARS
